Start with the distribution path

Parcel delivery, less-than-truckload, full truckload, mixed retail distribution and e-commerce fulfillment create different hazards. Package mass, dimensions, handling orientation and pallet pattern determine which protocol is appropriate. A generic statement that a box passed a drop test is not enough.

Test the product and package together

ISTA explains that its procedures evaluate the packaged-product system, not an empty box or packaging material by itself. For glass-door ovens, define allowable glass, hinge, handle, panel, cavity, accessory and cosmetic condition after testing. Check concealed damage and functional performance, not only carton appearance.

Use the right level of simulation

ISTA 1-Series procedures are integrity screens; 2-Series add partial simulation; 3-Series are general simulations for defined distribution environments. ISTA 3A addresses individual parcel shipments up to 70 kg, while other procedures address LTL, unit loads and retailer fulfillment. Select with the logistics team or test laboratory.

Retest changes and use replication

ISTA recommends repeat testing to improve confidence and states that product, package or process changes can require retesting. Cushion density, corrugated grade, accessory position, supplier, factory and shipping route all matter.
